National Events Month launches today

National Events Month (#NEMO), part of the annual Britain for Events campaign, launched today with the aim of increasing support and awareness for the events industry and attracting more international events to the UK.

The 39.1bn UK events industry is responsible for putting on a year of global events including The Ryder Cup, the Commonwealth Games and Glastonbury and the International Festival For Business to name but a few.

National Events Month aims to reach event organisers around the world and encourage them to use the UK for their meetings and events. The campaign is looking to bring more major events to the UK from sporting, musical, major conventions and trade fairs.

The Prime Minister David Cameron has backed the campaign and Helen Grant, Minister for Tourism, will also speak up for #NEMO, alongside Campaign Director Alistair Turner and Sehar Graham, who runs the event management course at Manchester University.

#NEMO will focus on four sectors of the industry, each culminating in a host event that demonstrates the quality and breadth of the industry.

The week will kick off with a focus on the £19.9bn conference industry, which coincides with the Liberal Democrats party conference in Glasgow. The campaign will then turn to the £11bn Exhibitions and Experiential industry that includes the IP EXPO Europe at ExCeL London, where Sir Tim Berners-Lee is one of the keynote speakers.

In week three the focus will move to Outdoor, Cultural, Sporting and Music Events (which combine to create a £5.8bn industry), where the campaign will move to the Association of Independent Festival Organisers Congress in Cardiff. Finally, the NFL's return visit to London will provide a perfect backdrop to a look the Corporate Hospitality (£1.2bn) and Incentive Travel (£1.2bn) sectors.

Alistair Turner, Campaign Director for the Britain for Events campaign, commented: "We're thrilled to announce the kick-off of National Events Month in October, kicking off with Conferences and Meetings Week. Britain's event industry has supported some of the most iconic events in history, from the 2012 Olympic Games in London, to the Commonwealth Games and Ryder Cup in Scotland this summer. Our industry drives tourism, business growth, providing knowledge and shared learning, and provides a sense of community that shapes Britain's identity."
