Cold War bunker to be turned into conference venue

A former Cold War bunker in Preston is to be transformed into an upmarket banqueting suite and conference centre, it has been reported.

Westleigh House in Lea Road is being refurbished by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and will add to the venues offering in the region with the ability to host up to 300 guests, the Lancashire Evening Post reports.

There will also be smaller teaching and seminar rooms as part of the new complex, which will be able to hold another 50 delegates.

Modern conferencing technology will feature at the site, with the likes of wireless internet connections being installed.

"We anticipate opening the facility in July or August. Our conference team has started to take the first bookings for the new premises," Paul Morris, director of facilities management at UCLan, told the newspaper.

Meanwhile, a new wedding and conference venue has been opened in Suffolk.

Wherstead House has been undergoing refurbishment work since 2008 and is now ready to take visitors, according to the Evening Star.
