Delegates at Labour North West Conference First to Use Ground Breaking Southport Cycle Scheme

Attendees at the Labour North West Regional Conference have been the first to take advantage of Southport Conference’s delegate bike loan scheme during a visit to the resort from 5–7th November 2010.

Southport played host to the regional conference for the fourth time, which attracted around 500 delegates. Those who took up the bike loan offer enjoyed full use of the bikes to access the town during free time at the three day conference.

Tony Corfield, Assistant Director, Leisure & Tourism, Sefton MBC explained; “The delegate bike loan scheme was officially launched as a service provided by the convention bureau in June as an extension to the wider Southport Cycling Town Project. It was designed to offer business visitors to the resort a greener alternative to using their cars, making the most of Southport’s accessibility and bike friendly credentials.”

Shadow Secretary of State and conference delegate Maria Eagle MP added; “Cycling is an excellent way for people of all ages to stay healthy and I would encourage delegates to take advantage of the scheme. Southport is one of 18 cycling demonstration towns that Labour established to provide a programme promoting cycling and this scheme is an excellent way to get around the town.”
