Mayor to promote London venues with New Year's fireworks

The mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has announced plans to promote the diverse range of London venues by way of a spectacular New Year's fireworks display.

The display will be arranged by world-famous pyrotechnician Christophe Berthonneau, and the display will televised on BBC One to be beamed around the world. The mayor is keen to promote the city to both holidaymakers and corporate tourists and to deliver a further boost to the London venues and conference facilities.

Mr Johnson said: "Even these tough economic times cannot detract from the wealth of architecture, culture, gastronomy and people which make London the best city in the world to work, rest and play."

The event will be sponsored by corporate giant LG Electronics in a bid to maximise the impact of the celebrations on a global scale.

The event venue that will form the centrepiece of the display will be the London Eye, while there will be free access to all transport systems between 11:45 pm and 4:30 am.
