New Leeds venue design revealed

The external design of the new Leeds Arena has been revealed by the consultancy Populous.

Due to open in 2012, the new Leeds venue has been designed to ensure spectators feel close to the action, with all seats facing the performance area.

"Our design team at Populous, led by project architect John Rhodes, has worked in close collaboration with the architect to respond to the outstanding vision of Leeds City Council," said Populous senior principal John Barrow.

The £80 million venue will feature a honeycomb design, complete with multi-coloured lights.

It uses a complex mathematical algorithm – a voronoi diagram – to create cellular shapes that are visible on key approaches to the arena.

Leader of Leeds council Keith Wakefield said: "The design has been carefully chosen to ensure the building is an exciting addition to the Leeds night-time scene helping to draw in visitors, boost the evening economy and act as a commanding gateway to the city centre."
