Merchant Adventurers Hall

The Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, York was built between 1357 & 1361 and is the finest building of its date and type in Europe. Visitors to the Hall will marvel at the splendour of the Great Hall where business was conducted, courts were held and social events were attended, they will learn about medieval hospitals when they visit the Hall’s Undercroft and they will understand more about the religious practices of the time by viewing the Chapel. Visitors will be further delighted to find that the Hall boasts fine collections of paintings, furniture and silver, all of which are on display to the public. The Hall is surrounded by gardens which visitors are welcome to stroll through and pause in.

Weddings
The Merchant Adventurers’ Hall is licensed for Civil Wedding Ceremonies which can take place either in the Great Hall or in the more intimate Governor’s Parlour. The Hall is the perfect venue for Wedding receptions in the heart of York.
The size and variety of rooms in the Hall means that it is suited for the most informal and intimate wedding to the most extravagant. The principal room on the first floor is called the Great Hall, and the large room beneath it on the ground floor is called the Undercroft. They each have floor space of about 90 feet by 40 feet and can seat a maximum of 180 persons in comfort. The Governor’s Parlour can seat up to 20 people. After the ceremony, a dinner or Wedding Breakfast can be held in the Great Hall. After the more formal part of the day, the Undercroft can be made available for dancing or a less formal party

Conferences
The Hall can sometimes be made available for conferences during the day during winter months only. It is used by a variety of organisations and businesses for product launches, promotions, awards ceremonies, careers fairs and many other similar activities. It is an ideal venue for Annual General Meetings and catering / buffet food can always be arranged.
