Leeds venue celebrates 2nd anniversary

The Yorkshire city of Leeds is celebrating the second anniversary of one of its biggest music venues, the 02 Academy.

Since its opening, the Leeds venue has attracted big-name stars like The Pogues, Brandon Flowers, MGMT and Faithless.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, manager Steve Hoyland said opening the venue was a "no-brainer".

Although there are a number of other venues where gigs are held in the city, such as the Cockpit, the Brudenell Social Club, Leeds Irish Centre, the Faversham and the universities' unions, there was a need for a space which could hold a large crowd, he said.

"Leeds has such a massive student population and the city was always on the list of top places for big bands to go to. But the biggest attraction is the venue itself – bands, agents, promoters, they all love it," he told the newspaper.

Judge Jules, Groove Armada, Foals and Pixie Lott are among the acts which will be performing at the venue over the coming months.
