Edinburgh venue expansion in progress

The foundations for the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) have been laid, it has been announced.

According to the EICC's head of events, Karen Wood, the Edinburgh venue is on course to be finished by 2013.

"We are on schedule for a spring 2013 opening and with work on the new space well underway we anticipate a steady stream of qualified new business enquires for a much enlarged EICC," she told Event.

The £85 million expansion will include a new 2,000 sq m multi-purpose main hall and is being carried out as part of the development partnership between the City of Edinburgh Council, Scottish Enterprise and Edinburgh International Conference Centre.

Earlier this year, City of Edinburgh Council leader Jenny Dawe said that it was hoped that the investment in the EICC would help the future prosperity of the city.

Sir Robert McAlpine will direct around 80 sub-contractors on-site during the build schedule of 126 weeks.
