“Green” power at Telford

Event organisers who use one of the Midlands’ largest event centres will now be able to take a “greener” approach.

The Southwater Event Group, which is made up of The International Centre, Telford, three local hotels, and an event production company, has signed a contract with a new renewable energy electricity supplier.

Chief Executive, Tom Gray, said the Group would be working with SmartestEnergy, the UK’s leading purchaser and supplier of renewable energy from the independent generation sector.

“We already have a sustainability policy in place at The International Centre and at all three of our hotels, but we wanted to step up our commitment and take an even more pro-active approach.

“Currently we re-use, recycle and reduce the waste generated by our venues, and by switching to a more sustainable energy source, we believe we can make a real difference to the impact our company has on the environment.”

Tom said the change would mean not only would the power used by the venues in the Group come from a “greener” source, but so would the power used during events.

“This means event organisers who have environmental concerns can be reassured we are doing everything we can to reduce the impact that their business has on the environment around us.”

SmartestEngergy deals with both purchasing power from a wide range of power generators, and the supply of renewable electricity to UK businesses.

Jo Butlin, Vice President of Retail, said: “We are delighted to be working with the Southwater Event Group in helping them and their clients to reduce their carbon footprint and their impact on the environment.”
