A welcome return to Leicester for the one and only Togmeister – Sir Terry Wogan

Leicester Conferences at the University of Leicester was delighted to welcome back the TOGs (Terry’s Old Geezers or Gals) for their annual convention. The 2011 event marks the 7th time it has been held at the University and this year’s gathering had a very Italian theme with the title of ‘MILAN’ – Make It Leicester Again Norm (with reference to Norman Macintosh, the TOGs main organiser).

The TOGs gather annually in support and celebration of their highly successful Children in Need charity fund raising activities. A large proportion of funds are raised from sales of their TOGs Celebrity Calendar which was officially launched by Sir Terry for a fourth year at the convention with a champagne reception and garden party. The calendar and majority of the TOGs fundraising are managed by Norman Macintosh and his wife Lesley who also work hard to put the convention together each year.

Sir Terry commenting on this year’s event said “It’s great to be back in Leicester once again. These TOGs just keep coming back. They always get a great welcome from the University and you look after them so well each year.”

In 2010 Sir Terry paid a visit to the University for a very different reason when he received an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree. Speaking on this occasion he said ““I would like to have been a student here - it looks like a really nice campus. I am not being sycophantic, but the University of Leicester has a very good reputation. I am deeply honoured to have been offered an Honorary Doctor of Laws. I will, of course, now demand a certain amount of respect.”
