Developer adds events venue to plans for St James Quarter

An events space is to be added to plans for a major redevelopment of St James Centre in Edinburgh.

The new site will be called St James Quarter and has been planned by BDP and Allan Murray Architects.

Originally, the design included shops, up to 250 apartments, two new hotels, around 15,000 sq m of office space, cafes and restaurants.

But planners have decided to scratch the offices, as they believe the market is not there, and are working on an events venue instead, according to the Scotsman.

"We are looking at a media facility – a small multiplex cinema – that can also be a conference venue, festival venue or show things like a 3D Six Nations rugby match," Martin Perry, development manager at Henderson Global Investors, which is financing the scheme.

The facility would add to the Scottish capital's top venues offering, which includes the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.
