Excel London joins energy network to heat 45,000 homes

Excel London and its International Conference Centre (ICC London), have signed up to a network to provide 45,000 East London homes with energy.

When Excel London is connected to the network, owned and operated by Cofely East London Energy, the resulting 230MW of heating capacity will be sufficient to heat the equivalent of 45,000 homes.

The network will also be able to serve the additional hotels, offices and housing developments as the area is regenerated over the next 20 years. This is part of plans for the low carbon regeneration of East London and the Mayor of London’s heat map strategy.

Excel London also has two emergency generators capable of supplying 7MW of power. The venue has over 4.1m visitors each year and it claims to be the only venue in the UK with the ability to continue running conference and exhibition facilities in the event of a power cut.

CEO of Excel London, David Pegler, commented: “It is fantastic that we can be at the cutting edge of energy management for such a vast conference and exhibition space. As the only enhanced conference and exhibition facility in the UK with this upgraded energy centre, we are pleased to be able to guarantee total power security to our exhibitors and visitors, while simultaneously giving something back to our local community.”

Excel London is located on a 100-acre site alongside Royal Victoria Dock in London’s Docklands, between Canary Wharf and London City Airport. Since opening in November 2000, the venue has hosted over 3,500 events including exhibitions, conferences, product launches, AGMs, association meetings, gala dinners, award ceremonies, sporting events and religious festivals.
