Leicester Conferences to showcase Special Olympics event at International Confex 2009

With the build up to London 2012 gathering momentum, Leicester is currently preparing for its own Olympic event – the Special Olympics GB National Summer Games.

Taking place in July 2009, it is anticipated the event will attract over 15,000 visitors to Leicester who will be coming to celebrate 7 days of sporting achievements in and around the city.

Officially a global charity and part of the International Olympics Movement, the Special Olympics is a non-elitist sport organisation that provides a free year-round training and competition programme for thousands of people with learning disabilities around the world. In the UK alone there are over 8000 members with work underway to reach a further 10,000 individuals by 2010.

The National Games in Leicester will be welcoming over 2700 athletes with 1200 supporting coaches all competing in 21 different sporting events. Leicester Conferences at the University of Leicester will be hosting the majority of the athletes within their city centre accommodation and nearby residential site in Oadby.

Visitors to the Leicester Conferences’ stand at Confex can find out more about the event including special discounts being offered to groups for accommodation during the games and the rest of the summer from July through to September 2009. The stand will also have plenty of giveaways such as USB memory sticks and healthy snacks to keep within their Olympic theme.

Trevor Miller, Sales and Marketing Manager at Leicester Conferences, University of Leicester says “We are really looking forward to Confex and discussing what Leicester Conferences and the East Midlands can offer customers. In particular, the Special Olympics event will certainly help raise the profile of Leicester and demonstrate that we very much welcome large events.”
