MIA Announce Membership Growth and Surplus for 2010

The Meetings Industry Association (MIA) announced a significant growth in membership at its 21st Annual General Meeting, resulting in a positive surplus for the industry association.

Membership numbers have now grown 12.5%, to 464, with an additional 199 registered member buyers, giving a total current membership of 663. This growth has resulted in the industry association achieving a surplus of £17,072 for the year ending 31st August 2010.

Held in London at the Royal College of Physicians, Chairman, Peter Darnell, Treasurer Alan Robinson and Chief Executive, Jane Longhurst all spoke about the significant steps the association have taken in the last 12 months to support the membership through the economic downturn, and achieve growth through the further development of its AIM accreditation scheme and initiatives such as the Destination Group, whose membership numbers now stand at a total of 30 destinations.

Prudent management of its finances also enabled the association to announce that it now has cash reserves of £42,821.

During her address, Jane Longhurst said; “Our proactive approach means it’s been a busy year for the MIA. Our team have been stretched, but have delivered an excellent membership offer which is clearly reflected in the significant growth in membership that has been achieved.”

Peter Darnell, Chief Executive of Chartridge Conference Centres, was re-elected as the MIA’s Chair, with Gary Payne, General Manager of London Venue One Great George Street, elected as the associations Vice Chair.

James Berresford, Chief Executive, VisitEngland, gave the official industry address to the MIA’s membership, with the AGM concluding with an evening of networking.
