Plans for new Leeds venue move forward

The preferred construction contractor for Leeds' new arena will be announced today (April 8th), bringing the plans for the £80 million stadium one step closer to being realised.

Senior councillors from Leeds City Council's executive board met yesterday and will unveil their decision during a visit to the arena site at Clay Pit Lane.

The announcement will be a major step forward in the project, which will see a 13,500-capacity arena added to the local venues offering and will create or protect around 200 jobs.

Construction work is expected to begin in late 2010 and the arena is on course to be completed in 2012.

"The announcement of the preferred construction contractor is a huge step forward in this important development project," said councillor Andrew Carter, leader of Leeds City Council.

"We remain fully on track to deliver this project," he added.

Outline planning permission for the arena was granted by the council last month.
