Telford unveils plans to become a destination for outdoor events

Meet Telford & Shropshire, part of Telford & Wrekin Council, have unveiled ambitious plans to become a leading venue for outdoor events, festivals, concerts and teambuilding.

The plans are part of a long-term strategy to transform Telford into one of the UK’s leading Convention Quarters.  Telford and Wrekin Council’s development of the Telford Town Park Arena, which has been designated a Queen Elizabeth II Field in Trust, forms part of an extensive multi-million pound programme to enhance the 450 acres of green space and extend its event and visitor offer.

The Arena, in the heart of the town’s 170 hectare park, provides an open-air event space for marquee hospitality, creative outdoor events and concerts for up to 6000 people.

Sarah Bird, Business Tourism Manager of Meet Telford & Shropshire, the official convention bureau for the region, commented: “The Arena offers endless opportunities for large scale outdoor events and is also a great fringe venue thanks to its on the doorstep location at The International Centre, one of the UK’s top ten convention centres.

“The venue provides event organisers with a high quality and diverse space right in the heart of Telford and within easy reach of the new Convention Quarter. This latest project highlights our ongoing commitment to developing a truly first class event destination, offering an all-encompassing and unforgettable visitor experience.”

Arts and Culture Manager at Telford & Wrekin Council, Psyche Hudson, explained: “Our investment in Telford Town Park is already paying huge dividends and our reputation for first-rate outdoor event venues is ever-growing. In addition to the Arena, which recently saw over 3,000 people descend on it for T-Live, the town’s biggest ever open-air festival with lead act McFly, the Park has become a major visitor attraction in its own right.

“Other exciting new elements to the park include the recently launched £200,000 aerial ropes course, with the council’s partner company, Closer to the Edge, offering visitors adrenalin packed teambuilding and corporate activities, not to mention the fantastic children’s water play area. The new development is all part of the council’s five year strategy to enhance and sustain the Park as a green space of significance and a place for relaxation, inspiration, exploration and adventure.”
